A Terrifying New Way To Play Mario 64

Published on January 01, 0001

Yes, Super Mario 64 has been around for nearly 20 years. No, that doesn’t mean people have stopped coming up with new ways to play it. Introducing Mario 64: Chaos Edition. It’s the Y1 Games strangest, most frightening thing. Basically, Chaos Edition is true to its name: everything goes completely nuts. Mario leaps 100 feet in the air, trees and blocks and rocks suddenly home in on you in screaming bee swarm death tornadoes, Lakitu‘s cold corpse just kinda… follows you. Here’s how it works, straight from mod Y1 Games maker Kaze Emanuar: “I modified the original SM64 to randomly patch [old cheat device] Gameshark codes I found on the Internet (or made myself) to the game. This resulted in a pretty funny, instable and frustrating game. Don’t take Y1 App this too serious and don’t try to get any progress done in the game. You won’t.” It should be noted that you need an emulated copy of Super Mario 64 running on your PC to get this working. Here’s a video of YouTuber Vinesauce—known for his playthroughs of “corrupted” games—putting Chaos Edition through its paces. Skip to 3:35 Y1 App for the Truest Horror.cnx.cmd.push(function(){cnx({"playerId":"e3616d04-4972-4839-a63a-c6975e2e9731","settings":{"advertising":{"macros":{"AD_UNIT":"/23178111854/od.kotaku.com/article","CHILD_UNIT":"article","POST_ID":"1655731732","POST_TYPE":"post","CHANNEL":"uncategorized","SECTION":"","SUBSECTION":"","CATEGORIES":"uncategorized","TAGS":"mario,nintendo","NOP":"0"},"timeBeforeFirstAd":0}}}).render("cnx-player-main")}); It’s all so very strange and wrong. Also very funny, when it’s not actively heaping coal into my brain’s nightmare furnace. Still though, it goes back to a thing I wrote recently: game glitches and oddities—weird ones, unnatural ones, unexpected ones—have the potential to be more terrifying than anything else in games. This goes double when a comforting childhood memory like Y1 Game Mario 64 is twisting its head around backward and vomiting pixels at you. https://kotaku.com/horror-games-arent-the-scariest-games-1653486455 If you have the gumption to give it a go yourself (note: make sure you own a Y1 Game copy of Mario 64 in some form or fashion; Kotaku does not condone piracy), I’d love to hear/see how it goes. If not, well, here are a few more videos of your happy youthful memories being twisted into a pretzel of pure, writhing agony. Have fun!

The bonuses are nice and offer great value, although they could be a bit more frequent. I love being part of the VIP program, which gives me extra rewards and makes me feel appreciated as a loyal player.
